Seedling Pot Adult Activity Kit

For thousands of years people have been building plant containers for easier transportation, dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians. Their methods were more permanent containers made from terracotta and other ceramics, but since gardening and agriculture have existed so have the seedling pots.

These seedling pots are made from recycled news paper and are meant to support a small plant until it is big enough to enter your garden (or planter box, or bigger pot), and when it is, the entire pot and goes right into the dirt. Newspapers largely use organic inks that won't harm your garden. As the paper breaks down it releases important nutrients and carbons into the soil. It is also said that it will prevent weeds (to certain extents) and is a nice dessert for the earthworms of your garden.

While folded newspaper seedling pots can be used, these pots are much more study as they are made with a paper and flour mixture. The flour will also add nitrogen to the soil which is good for plants (in moderation). These seedling pots are a great way to get a head start in your garden this spring.

This kit from the Canmore Public Library has the instructions and materials needed to make your own newspaper seedling pot, as well seeds and soil to help get your gardening season started!

Reserve your free kit online today, and come by the Canmore Public Library starting April 14, 2024 to pick up your kit.
