A wand is a thin, light-weight rod meant to be held in one hand. Evidence of wand usage extends back to prehistoric times—a stick used for reaching, pointing, drawing in the dirt, and directing other people is one of the earliest and most simple of human tools.

Wands were found with the remains of the Red “Lady” of Paviland, an Upper Paleolithic male skeleton discovered in Wales, and they were also used during birthing ceremonies in the Middle Kingdom of Egypt.

Magical purposes were added to the folklore of the wand by Homer, whose characterizations of Hermes, Athena, and Circe all used wands in his writings The Iliad and The Odyssey. Wands have also featured heavily in Roman religions, traditional ballads from England and Scotland, Italian fairy tales, and the art of traditional tarot. In British formal government ceremony, special officials may carry a wand of office that represents their power, such as the ceremonial mace, the sceptre, and the staff of office.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, The Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum, and of course the Harry Potter series all feature wands, and wands were a favorite of Walt Disney and can be found in the Disney classics Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, The Black Cauldron, Cinderella, and The Princess and the Frog. Wands may also be seen in anime and manga.

While the mystical, magical properties of wands have not been proven, they can be beautiful items for décor or play. With this activity kit from Canmore Public Library, we’ve provided the supplies for you to make your very own midsummer spoon wand!
