Like most paddlers, canoeing must have always been a part of Karen's DNA. She fell in love with all things canoeing in highschool, thanks to Girl Guides, Gracefield Camp in Quebec, and her outdoor education teachers. For many summers, Karen was a canoe instructor and canoe trip leader in Quebec for Gracefield Camp, Paddlefoot, and the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association. As part of her thesis research for her degree in Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism from Lakehead University, she did a one month canoe trip in Wabakimi Provincial Park. Upon moving out west, she lived her dream by guiding on the Nahanni River for two summers.

Karen loves paddling in the big Voyageur canoes. She did a two week Voyageur canoe trip on the Lake of the Woods as part of her university degree and was able to make the same joke everyday: "At least we're all in the same boat!" She also guided historical tours on the Bow River in Banff National Park, and looks forward to more family trips in the big boat.
